passive_6628 - stereo projection installation(2002)

passive_6628: model of installation set up for the Old Town Hall, City Gallery Prague, Czech Republic

The passive_6628 project together with the Sky and Tears projects belongs to the "eyeworks", a series of installations continuously produced since 2002. Eyeworks are virtual-visual environments designed for passive observation and physical perception. They communicate with the visitor through visual and physical sensations under specific conditions without the use of sound and with no interaction.

Project Description

passive_6628 utilizes a stereoscopic effect and creates an immersive virtual environment of slowly descending cherry-tree blossoms.
While watching, the viewer may sometimes experience a feeling that s/he is watching snowfall or slowly flowing water. This sensation is heightened by the stereo projection effect as it enables one to perceive individual objects directly in the space while, at the same time, being fully within the scene.
Although the gallery space used for the projection is closed-off, it is not sound-proof. While the viewers are not distracted by other optical stimuli and they are provided with an ideal setting to observe the scenery, at the same time they are free to receive any audio stimulation from the surrounding environment since the project itself is silent.

Stereo system

The project uses stereo system set up with two identical data projectors equipped with specially designed filters and lenses, both of which are polarized. This method of stereo distribution requires that the signals transmitted to the projectors are synchronized; to achieve this either synchronized DVD-players or a computer with a special graphic card can be used. The project also requires special rear projection screen.
