tail - dynamic sculpture (2008)

Tail presented @ Kulturhuset, Stockholm, Sweden

Tail movement samples

Project Description:
For my dynamic robotic sculpture Tail I developed its own movement language, causing its appearance and behavior to change over time. Sometimes it is still (frozen) for a couple of seconds, sometimes it moves around its base dynamically.
The behavior of the sculpture was inspired but not determined by the behavior of animals' tails, especially big cats' tails. To these animals the tail is a navigation device used to balance the body in high-speed motion but also an endlessly moving body part which sometimes seems to be acting quite independently and randomly.

The sculpture consists of a small motor and a black neoprene hose attached together. The motor is anchored to the ground but the neoprene hose is able to move freely. Connected to the motor is a hidden microcontroller which determines Tail's behavior.
